Top 5 Reasons to Study in South Africa

Why Students Study in South Africa

1. Explore subjects from a wide range of perspectives

South Africa is a melting pot of identities and cultures. The country has 11 official languages encompassing English, Afrikaans and nine ethnic languages including Zulu. The larger cities, like Cape Town and Johannesburg, are home to expats from around the world, while in smaller towns across the country, you’ll still find many different languages spoken in every day life.

This breadth of diversity in culture and language carries through to a South African education. By studying at a South African university, you’ll get to interact with students from a myriad of backgrounds, and gain both international perspectives and a distinctly African point of view.

Reviewers on EDUopinions say this blend of global and local knowledge makes programmes highly diverse, preparing students to work both around the world and on the African continent.

Exploring Literature and Beyond

After graduating from North-West University in 2023 with a BA in Humanities that included English, I can honestly state that the experience was eye-opening! If you have a passion for literature but would also like to study other humanities fields, this program is ideal for you.

The classes were diverse, ranging from in-depth analysis of English literature to courses on history, philosophy, and even art history. It gave me a well-rounded understanding of human culture and expression. The English courses were especially strong, with professors who were passionate about the written word. They helped me develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for different writing styles.

What I liked most was the focus on both classic and contemporary works. We studied Shakespeare and Jane Austen, but also explored modern African literature and current social issues. This kept the learning interesting and relevant to the world today.

While the program had a strong focus on literature, the flexibility to explore other Humanities subjects allowed me to tailor my studies to my interests. I even took a course on ancient mythology, which ended up being one of my favorites!

If you’re looking for a program that will challenge you to think critically, analyze literature, and explore the broader world of human experience, then NWU’s BA in Humanities with English is a great choice. It’s a program that prepared me well for further studies or a career path that involves strong communication and analytical skills.

My HR Journey at North-West University

Back in 2012, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management/Personnel Administration from North-West University. The program gave me a solid understanding of all things HR, from recruitment and training to employee relations and compensation. The professors were knowledgeable and practical, making the classes interesting and engaging.

I especially liked the focus on South African labor laws and regulations. This gave me a big head start in my career, as I felt confident navigating the legal side of HR right from the beginning. The program also offered opportunities to participate in simulations and case studies, which helped me apply what I learned in real-world scenarios.

While I graduated over a decade ago, the core HR principles I learned at North-West University have definitely stayed with me. The program prepared me well for my HR career and gave me a strong foundation to build on.

A few problems but good varsity

While North-West University has its strengths, it’s not without its challenges. Slow procedures and bureaucratic processes can be frustrating, and strikes due to bursary and registration matters have been a concern. However, the university’s sporting activities have been a highlight, offering a range of programs and facilities that cater to different interests and levels. From competitive teams to recreational activities, sports have provided a healthy outlet and a sense of camaraderie among students. The university’s investment in sports infrastructure and programs has also enabled us to compete at the national level, fostering a sense of pride and school spirit.

Despite the challenges, I believe that the university is committed to addressing these issues and providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all students. The university has already made significant strides in improving its administrative processes and responding to student concerns. I’ve also appreciated the university’s commitment to student wellness, from counseling services to health programs, which have helped me manage stress and anxiety. Overall, while North-West University is not perfect, I believe that it has the potential to be a world-class institution, and I feel proud to be part of its community.

University Overall Rating (/5)
1. Stellenbosch University 4.56
2. Tshwane University of Technology 4.52
3. Nelson Mandela University 4.40
4. University of the Witwatersrand 4.39
5. Rhodes University 4.36

Stellenbosch University tops this student-led ranking of universities in South Africa largely thanks to high scores for student life, location (being in the heart of wine country may have something to do with it!) and the quality of professors.

However, when looking at other factors, Stellenbosch leaves the number one spot. For example, North-West University leads for career prospects and value, suggesting that you don’t need to study in one of the more populous South African provinces to gain a valuable education.

Conclusion

Students looking to study in diverse location, where they can divide their time between a host of extracurricular activities and studying on a vibrant campus, might consider studying in South Africa.
