10. Stockholm

Best Student Cities in Europe Stockholm

At joint 20th position on the QS Best Student Cities ranking, Stockholm is also the highest-ranking Scandinavian city on the list (the other ranking cities are Copenhagen, Gothenburg, and Oslo). Students aren’t phased by the relatively mild weather in this Swedish city, and there are almost 30,000 students at the Stockholm University alone. Stockholm’s ranking in the list is affected by its affordability rating, and EDUopinions student reviewers also mention the difficulty of finding housing in the city—a problem that will plague other cities on this ranking, too.

A lifetime experience in Stockholm!

Having the opportunity to study there was one of the most precious things happened in my life! Having been given the best of the teaching quality, and also meeting some amazing people from the whole world, contributed to broaden my horizons and expand my knowledge regarding Business Administration and Political Science!

However, the cost of living there is an issue, but anyway, many working opportunities can help the financing of anybody’s studies.

Also, student life is kind of poor and the housing is difficult to be arranged.

Life in Stockholm University

Stockholm University campus is very nice and so close to the nature. It was enjoyable in walking around the campus as it is located next to a national park. Lecturers, staffs and classmates were very friendly. The program I studied was mainly in English (some courses were only in Swedish). As an international master student, I was a bit frustrated about but it was understandable. It was super cool that there were some courses in either Swedish or English, which meant if an international student chooses that course, it will be taught in English. Hope the lecturers will consider to offer those courses originally only taught in Swedish with bilingual option.

9. Amsterdam

Best Student Cities Amsterdam

Sharing 20th position with Stockholm is the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. Home to multiple top-ranked universities and with a rich history and vibrant nightlife, it’s no surprise that students find the Dutch capital a top place to study. However, reviewers mention the high cost of living in the city, which contributes to Amsterdam’s lower ranking on the QS list. But if you can afford to live in the capital, students say that the busy cultural calendar, and the natural beauty of the city, make it one of the best student cities in Europe.

Being a 3rd year Communication Science student at the University of Amsterdam has been quite the experience, let me break it down.
First off, the college itself is a beautiful blend of tradition and innovation. The historic buildings and canals make it feel like you’re studying in a postcard, while the cutting-edge research and tech keep things fresh. Plus, the coffee shops and vibrant city life are a constant source of inspiration.
Now, onto the course. Communication Science here is the real deal. From media theory to strategic communication, you get a well-rounded education that sets you up for the real world. The professors are passionate, and you’ll discover that critical thinking is your new superpower. Group projects might drive you crazy, but they teach you valuable teamwork skills.
And last but not least, the student life. Amsterdam is a city that never sleeps, and neither do we. From cozy cafes to wild parties, there’s always something happening. You’ll make friends from all corners of the globe, and the cultural diversity is mind-blowing.
So, if you’re up for a mix of academic challenge and unforgettable adventures, this place is where it’s at. Cheers to the University of Amsterdam and the fantastic journey it offers! 🎓🌍📚

Greatest worst experience?

After experiencing 4 years at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, I would not say I’m at the greatest university in the world. On a personal level I would 100% recommend my university and think it is an amazing place to get to know people from different cultures and in general I think most people would feel comfortable in my university. Moreover, I think the campus looks great and has very good facilities to study, do school exercises, or just hang with friends. Furthermore, I think Amsterdam is an amazing city and the campuses are close to the centre. The school is in a great environment and you can easily get to know Amsterdam. In general the level of classes is pretty good, the English level for international students in my opinion is also good, the only thing is that sometimes the teachers can be a bit lazy and the structure is sometimes a bit difficult to understand. Some teachers at times are not clear and due to the shortage of teachers, teachers are overwhelmed and do not have time to respond to all students. However, if you study, listen in class, pass your classes. Amsterdam is the place to be!

8. Lausanne

Lausanne best student cities

On the shores of Lake Geneva, Lausanne is a beautiful French city known for its mountain views, sports heritage, and cultural events calendar. As one of the smaller cities on this list, Lausanne benefits from a relatively large student population, giving the city a unique energy compared to other larger French student cities. Lausanne is also home to EFPL, one of the best universities in Europe for engineering, so there are lots of job opportunities for students on technical degrees.

École hôtelière de Lausanne

EHL is a world-renowned hospitality management school. The bachelor’s degree lasts 4 years, in which the first year, the “preparatory year” is a slightly more innovative course with operational classes such as cooking or catering. During these 4 incredible years, you have the chance to attend 2 internships wherever you decide to go in the world (I personally did my first internship at the Ritz Carlton in Montreal, an experience I will not forget). Moreover, the EHL campus is really incredible and it is also brand new, it has just been renovated. Over the 3 years of the bachelor’s degree that follows the preparatory year, you have the opportunity to explore EHL’s other campuses, such as Passugg, or Singapore (currently under construction). These 3 years are mainly focused on management and finance. In any case, if I can suggest a school in which the campus is fantastic, the social life as well and the classes are very well structured, I would recommend the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne. Not to mention that Lausanne is a very student-oriented and festive city. The opportunities after graduating from EHL are abundant and significant in the world of luxury, finance and hospitality.

EHL

Since the moment I arrived here, I sincerely have loved it. The atmosphere is so sociable and joyous. There is such kindness and amicability around the place. The networking is incredible and the opportunities available are truly once in a lifetime. The course is very enjoyable and immersive. The hands-on approach and face-to-face classes are incredibly efficient. The campus right now is extremely nice but slightly cramped, however with the new campus expansion unveiling right around the corner, I feel like EHL will return to its natural excellence.

University of Vienna The best in the world

In the last couple of years, I’ve had the honor of attending the University of Vienna, and it has been an amazing academic experience. The university has a distinguished history and a well-earned reputation.

The instructors are very knowledgeable and friendly, always eager to participate in conversations and offer advice. It is surprising how many different academic interests are offered in the variety of degrees provided.

The lively campus life is what really stands out. It is easy to meet new people and establish long-lasting connections at the institution because of its many events, clubs, and cultural activities.

Vienna itself provides a wonderful backdrop for student life, with a blend of tradition, modernism, and culture. The city’s superb public transit system and accessibility make it simple to visit all of its attractions.

The University of Vienna’s dedication to academic quality has surely enriched my learning experience and bettered me for the future, despite the workload sometimes being demanding. I would never swap the time I’ve spent here for anything, and I heartily endorse it for any aspiring student.

Great quality teaching

The programme is really well structured and it gives you a good amount of information for you to be able to continue your academic path after the bachelor’s degree. Most of the teachers are really professional and give great examples of the stuff they’re teaching, so it doesn’t get boring (in most cases). The university is located near the city centre of Vienna, there are many great places to eat/have a drink/relax in close proximity. The city itself is not to expensive to live in and is beautiful.

6. Edinburgh

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is the highest-ranking Scottish city on the QS ranking, though Glasgow does appear at number 33rd. The city is home to the University of Edinburgh, one of the best universities in the UK, and is a hub for industries such as publishing, media, financial services, and technology. But Edinburgh is also a gateway to the rest of Scotland, meaning students here can explore activities like hiking on their days off, making the most of the incredible scenery.

The University of Edinburgh is, depending on what you want to gain from University, a great place to be. Ultimately, every student experience differs, but everybody tends to unite on the fact that the city is a fantastic place to be as a young adult. As an English Literature student, the bookshops everywhere offer a great way to engage with my course, and the standard of teaching is excellent. The tutors are a particular standout – they are always willing to offer help and are genuinely interested in the content.

I’ve been at HTW Dresden for a year now, and I’ve had an amazing time. The university is perfectly situated near excellent transit options, which allow for quicker commutes and round-the-clock access to public transportation. Best Student Life with a lot of convenience

IUBH is one of the rare universities that allows you to have a comfortable life as a student. You can find enough time to attend classes, study, and work along with exploring the amazing and the happening Berlin city.

The location is perfect offering a lot of the lively life a city can offer. You can find almost everything and it is close to the city centre, Alexander Platz. There are lots of parks, restaurants, and cafes, and moving around in the city is quite comfortable and convenient. I assure you you will have a great experience and be amazed by it.

4. Zürich

Student City Zurich

The Swiss business hub of Zürich has two universities in the top 150 in the world, ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, meaning it’s a great choice for students who want to balance an exciting, lakeside student lifestyle with a top-notch technical education. Although Switzerland is famed for higher living costs than other European countries, student reviews on EDUopinions mention the strong community atmosphere on campus and in the city and the wide variety of events.

The Double Degree Program in law: a both Swiss and international experience!

The Double Degree Program allows you to study law both at the University of Zurich and at another partner university – in my case, King’s College London – thereby preparing you for a career in swiss and global law firms. The campus of the University of Zurich is in the heart of the city, a few steps away from the old centre and the beautiful lake. The campus offers many affordable cafeterias and study spaces as well as two fitness centres proposing a number of (free) activities. One negative aspect, in my opinion, is the disparity of information regarding the classes available: while some teachers provide extensive descriptions of their modules on their websites, others do not, which makes the selection sometimes difficult. All in all, I am very happy that I chose the University of Zurich for my law degree.

Cutting edge education between theory and practice

I studied at this university for my masters degree and I definitely would recommend it. The topics of the lectures are cutting edge, you have the opportunity to build your own program and most of the professors (at least in my field) are real experts. There are many possibilities of doing research projects, and by so having access to great labs and gear. The teaching has a perfect blend between theory and practice. The teaching is strongly connected to research, therefore the topics covered are very cutting edge and the chance to publish a paper during the studies is concrete. Great programs for encouraging spin-off startups. Student life is very active, with a lot of student associations for any of your interests. The environment is really international but knowing German is a plus for everyday life. ETH offers you many services for free like sports facilities and language courses. I didn’t really like the exam system: I find them too much focused on speed, resistance to stress and memory than actual reasoning. Furthermore, you have a chance per year to have an exam, at a fixed date. Accommodation is hard to find in the city and expensive, and student dorms are still very expensive and not enough. Life in the city is expensive, chances of a scholarship are basically non-existent and therefore it will be hard to enjoy life in the city, let it just be a beer out.

Plus, student reviewers on EDUopinions say that the vast number of cultural sights in the city make it a great place to be a student—although you’ll have to contend with a higher than average cost of living.

2. Munich

Second best student city in Europe Munich

The second-best student city in Europe (and the fourth in the world) is Munich, the capital of Germany’s southernmost region, Bavaria. Known as an economic hub, home to many German and international companies, Munich also has a strong cultural identity, which students can explore while studying at a world-class institution such as the Technical University of Munich. As with many European student cities, Munich suffers from student accommodation shortages, but once you’re settled, you can enjoy the incredible nightlife, green spaces, and events calendar (including the world-famous Oktoberfest).

Excellent connection to leading German and international companies

I’m doing my master’s degree at TUM and in my opinion it was not as good as I expected. There were too little seminars and assignments during the semester, and we only have exams at the end. What I liked the most about it so far was the single seminar I had, about contemporary issues in financial accounting and auditing. Even with some downsides I would still recommend it to a friend, because it is still an amazing program. For example I had subjects like Management Accounting, Asset Management and Technical Mechanics, which shows how broad scope it covers (business, finance and engineering). There are several campuses: the one for Management is in the city center with one of the best views, the technological campus is 40 min outside of Munich and quite new. Unfortunately in Munich it’s not easy to find accommodation and the support is very limited since everyone is in need. There are many nice initiatives like different clubs and some parties organized by them every once in a while. Munich is awesome, kinda expensive in general but totally worth the price! Parks and lakes make it even better during summer. Nightlife is also expensive but very good. My advice for new students is to look for a flat with a long time in advance and be prepared with a big budget.

World-class teaching in a world-class environment, that’s pretty much it. In my opinion, here the rankings do reflect reality well. Lots of subjects you can choose from, great facilities, and the quality of teaching is also generally quite good.

In terms of the city itself, Munich is just great in all seasons, in the very centre of Europe and full of things to do and see, festivals and culture. The university though, is located outside of town (25 mins away from the centre), which should be considered.

Best Student City in Europe London

London is once again top of the ranking of the best student cities in Europe and the world. It’s been at number one since 2022, owing to the number of prestigious universities, the international environment, and the range of job opportunities available. The biggest city in Europe is undeniably an incredible place to be a student: free museums and galleries, a wealth of events, buzzing local areas, and a unique food scene make this a fantastic student destination. Despite high living costs, students are consistently drawn to London because of the wealth of experiences available, whether professional or social.

The Campus

The university is good, the standard of education is impressive and I’m always inspired by the people around me from their accomplishments to their depth of knowledge and most importantly how each individual carries themself. Personally, I believe the marking can be harsh so if you want that 1:1 you have to work extremely hard but once you achieve it, it is worth it. One of my favourite things about King’s College is the campus, it’s in the heart of London and has the best places to study, eat, and have a good time. However, one thing I will say is making friends in this uni may not be as easy as you think a lot of the time individuals prefer to stick to their old groups from sixth form or secondary but that is not to say you will not find friends because the beauty of a London university is you will be introduced to many individuals of various backgrounds.

What Would The Ranking of Best Student Cities in Europe Look Like From a Student’s Perspective?

What would happen if we rejigged the QS Best Student Cities ranking to be entirely decided by EDUopinions student reviews?

QS Student Ranking

It’s Lausanne that tops our version of the QS best student cities in Europe rankings. The Swiss city jumps a huge eight places to take the top spot away from London, which drops to third. Edinburgh, too, is a winner in the EDUopinions version of the QS best student cities in Europe ranking.

Meanwhile, Berlin drops out of the top five, largely because of low student scores for accommodation and, surprisingly, student life. Similarly, Munich also lies outside the top five best student cities in Europe, though EDUopinions reviewers still rank it highly for career prospects and value.

Has this ranking changed your mind about where to study? Or given you some new options that you hadn’t considered before?
