QS World University Rankings Europe: What Do Students Say?

QS University Rankings Europe

The QS World University Rankings are a respected annual feature of the university rankings cycle. To create the ranking, QS considers quite a few factors, including academic reputation, the faculty-to-student ratio, academic citations per faculty, and the international student ratio.

For the 2025 ranking, there are three new elements to the methodology: sustainability (which considers the impact an institution makes on the world), employment outcomes (which considers alumni impact), and an institution’s international research network (a measure of collaborations with other research institutions).

As a result, the QS Rankings offer a broad yet comprehensive review of how well students fare during and after university, the teaching experience, and each institution’s global reputation.

So, here is QS’ ranking of European universities and what students say about each top-ranked institution.

10. The University of Manchester

Manchester QS Ranking

The University of Manchester is one of six UK universities to rank in the top 10 in Europe, a strong result for a country that has only recently decided to sever academic and cultural ties with the European Union! The University of Manchester is the third-largest university in the UK by student numbers, with a student population of over 45,000.

Student reviews of the University of Manchester indicate that, first and foremost, students appreciate the university’s general atmosphere of inclusivity and support. In particular, students praise faculty members as supportive and helpful, particularly during challenging situations such as COVID-19 and academic strikes.

Additionally, the University of Manchester ranks very highly for its internationality, both in the QS methodology and among student ratings. Students say that the support offered to international students is attentive and valuable and that the university feels like a home for many different cultures.

MY
A really inclusive space.

As an international student, I did not feel out of place in this university. This is actually what I was personally most concerned about in terms of coming abroad for further studies. I was afraid to be faced with racism and misunderstanding due to the cultural differences and that I might never get used to the food here.

That, was not the case at all. This university provides so much support and feedback system to those who needs it. For example, during my first year in uni, I had to do my first year first semester online. it was pretty difficult for me as I was not used to online studies as most of us students were during the pandemic. With all the student support system and with the guide of my academic advisor, I did just fine. Also, the international students in the university are so diverse. There are more students from all around the world that were studying there(from more than 170 countries if I remembered correctly.), which did not make me feel like I stuck out like a sore thumb or anything, which smoothed over a lot of worries that I had.

Academic wise, Manchester offers a wide range of course selections. For me, I picked International business Finance and Economics (IBFE). It was truly an enjoyable course and my peers were friendly as well which was great.

Overall, I shared my personal experience regarding this university and would definitely recommend this university for students who are considering a spot at the University of Manchester.

9. Technical University of Munich – TUM

Top 10 Europe Technical University of Munich

The Technical University of Munich is the only German university to make the top 10 European institutions in the QS World University Rankings. Over the last few years, TUM has increased its global rankings position from 50th place to 28th place and scores very highly for employer reputation.

Student reviewers likewise comment on the high-quality academic environment at TUM, commenting specifically on the practical experiences offered during classes and the quality of faculty.

The size of this specialist technical university also makes a difference, students say. In the QS methodology, TUM scores relatively high for the faculty-to-student ratio—there are 50,000 students, more than at the University of Manchester, but class sizes are kept small enough to aid interaction between students and professors.

The university is compact and accommodating; there’s not as many students in my year, so classes can be really enjoyable, the lecturers gave you specific attention. 8. The University of Edinburgh

University of Edinburgh Rankings

While the University of Edinburgh has dropped a few places since the 2024 QS World University Rankings, it’s still the only institution in Scotland to place in the top 10. One of the oldest institutions in the UK, the University of Edinburgh has developed a strong reputation worldwide and has gained high scores in the ranking for its reputation and international network.

While students at the University of Edinburgh frequently comment on the quality of teaching and research at the university, the university’s history and campus are more often at the top of their minds. For example, students on EDUopinions score the university highly for its location in the heart of the city, where old buildings jostle against newer, modern facilities.

Additionally, the city of Edinburgh is regularly mentioned as a great student city, with a diverse population and a strong local culture to explore.

As one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Edinburgh has a lot of old buildings, so everyday it seems that I study in old castles with beautiful sceneries. Our school has a lot of resources, for example, library resources. In case we don’t make good use of it, our school set a course to help us with that, which is really nice. For my major, we have practical homework and readings. Tutors would explain some theories in seminars and we do our practice and have further discussions in out tutorials. I think it is a good place to study.

Flexible course on a beautiful campus

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my first year at The University of Edinburgh. The campus is stunning, and has lots of facilities (gym, library, cafes) and study areas. Also, since it is in the centre of the city it makes it very convenient and means that I can walk to campus (10 minutes!) from my accommodation. My main course is Sustainable development, however due to the flexibility of this curriculum I was also able to take electives in both Politics and Geography, two subjects which I had considered studying at university. This means that I am able to approach my courses with multiple different perspectives, really contributing to my learning.
The one downside which I have experienced this year is that many classes have been cancelled due to strikes, which despite being a cause I fully support as an individual, it has definitely been detrimental to my overall education and knowledge.

7. EPFL – L’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne

EPFL Top University

EPFL is a sister institute to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), which actually appears just a few places above EPFL in this ranking. The institution has a strong reputation for the quality of its STEM teaching, yet it scores lower than other institutions on this list for employment outcomes.

The university hasn’t attracted the same number of student reviews as others on this list, making it more difficult to understand what students think about studying there. However, the reviews that it does have are overwhelmingly positive, with students ranking EPFL highly for its internationality; QS gave the school a perfect score of 100 for its international student ratio.

Students also comment on the academic rigour of the university, with the workload being relatively strenuous in the early years of undergraduate degrees.

Affordability and Campus

The campus is driven by the leading class research and innovation mindset. I really liked how you are surrounded by people from a variety of background and this school sets a new standard of quality in education. The cost of the school is funded in large proportion by the Swiss government, making it really affordable for students. I would criticize the quality of the teaching. All professors are researcher, and some of them don’t have an education background at all. It makes it really difficult sometimes to get it through. Thankfully we are surrounded by older students and teaching assistants that can help us.

There are many EPFL associations for students who would like to do arts, philosophy, sports or have a hands-on experience, I personally worked with the Rocket Team EPFL and Junior Entreprise EPFL as a software engineer.

Each semester you can choose courses that best suits you and in each course several teaching assistants will make sure that students have a good understanding of the course material.

6. Université PSL

Universite PSL Ranking

Unfortunately, EDUopinions hasn’t gathered student ratings for Université PSL, but we can get an idea of what the university is like from individual methodology scores in the QS ranking.

PSL, also known as the Paris Sciences et Lettres University, comprises 11 smaller institutions, including Collège de France and MINES Paris. However, given each school’s total research, PSL is ranked as one institution.

PSL is another university that has been climbing the QS rankings over the last few years, from 53rd in 2020 to 24th this year. It gets strong scores from QS for its reputation and faculty-student ratio and an almost perfect score for its international research network.

If you’re a student or recent graduate and want to contribute a review of Université PSL to help fellow prospective students, you can start writing your review here.

5. University College London – UCL

QS Rankings UCLUCL is considered one of the best universities in London and one of the largest; almost 50,000 students are enrolled in its undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Unfortunately, the sheer quantity of students at UCL can sometimes mean limited interaction with professors. Student reviewers on EDUopinions also say that classes can sometimes be overenrolled, resulting in a disappointing student experience. Likewise, given the limited space in some campus buildings, finding spots to study can also be challenging.

On the other hand, students say that their experience outside of the academic environment has been outstanding. UCL has a wide international faculty and student body, and the community environment enables students to get involved in various activities outside their studies.

MSc in Remote Sensing - not great

I just completed my MSc in Remote Sensing and Environmental Mapping at UCL and it was extremely disappointing. Our program was completely over-enrolled (the biggest class sizes our professors have ever had) which meant we did not actually get access to all of the modules they promise on their website, and the professors had no time for us. The classes were also extremely theory based, and I never actually learned how to do any practical remote sensing using a program. If you think you will learn during your dissertation think again – they only allow your advisor to help for about 4 weeks and then you’re on your own. Really not a good experience.

My UCL experience so far...

I have been at UCL for a year now and overall I have really liked my university experience. The campus itself is beautiful and is located in a wonderful area of London. There is lots do around and it is well connected so can always spend quality time with friends in between lectures and classes. The university itself has an abundance of societies ranging from sports societies to a Bubble tea society. It means that you can really find your people at society events and you can take a break from academics very easily. My course itself has been very difficult with lots of reading and there are some lecturers who may not be so engaging all the time, but I really enjoy the content of what I am learning. The marking strikes did have an impact on us but in general, first year went really well. I even had contact with the welfare and support team and they really helped me with my issues. The main thing is that when I wake up in the morning, I’m really excited to head into campus and learn about the things I really love.

4. ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich Ranking

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is regularly ranked one of the best universities in Europe, especially if you’re going to study engineering. The quality of the research facilities and teaching make a degree at ETH a serious undertaking, but students say that the challenges are undoubtedly worth it.

The rigorous academic environment does have some downsides, say students. For one, exam season is a stressful time for students, especially since it’s more intense than at other universities. The amount of work can also impact other aspects of your university experience. On the plus side, when you find the time, you can join many student organisations.

Students also say that the challenging classes result in a strong foundation of knowledge, meaning employment opportunities are easy to seek out. The school also offers assistance with finding graduate roles, and QS gives ETH Zurich a high rating for students’ employment outcomes.

Not perfect, but really good.

Grew up in Zurich and attended ETH in mechanical engineering.

Going abroad for an exchange made me realize how good ETH is. Low assignment workload and pure focus on theory in the first years means the theoretical depth and thoroughness with which it is tested makes this a great education. The student engineering projects that we were able to participate in were world-class. ETH also has a great low-bureacracy culture. The amount of lectures held on cutting edge topics by world-class professors is amazing. And: In their last few years, students have the opportunity to participate in internationally competitive research.

With some exceptions, the students I took classes with during my exchange in North America did not seem nearly as consistenly competent as my peers at ETH.

However, ETH has a few areas where there is definitely room for improvement:

– Male-dominated in many fields, both in the student body and among professors. This definitely must be improved.
– Generally, ETH is not nearly as diverse as other unis (e.g. MIT), which means there’s less diversity of thought and a less creative culture.
– Ethics and scientist’s/engineer’s role in society are almost never discussed at ETH.

Studying at ETH

Studying at ETH is fun… sometimes. Many courses tend to be a lot of work. There are not only lectures but also exercises one should solve every week which take quite a while to solve. Then there are not only the mandatory courses but also other subjects one has to do for the credits which are not directly related to your major. I think the best part are the events which usually take place in the evening organized by the Fachvereine. I also like the fact that thinking back to where I‘ve started I did learn quite a bit. ETH really makes an effort in giving you job opportunitues with events such as polymesse and kontaktparty etc.

3. University of Cambridge

University Rankings Cambridge

Traditionally regarded as one of the UK’s most prestigious and well-respected universities, the University of Cambridge is ranked the third-best in Europe by QS. It’s dropped three places in the global ranking since last year when it was second in the world. It’s now fifth. However, its perfect scores for employment outcomes, academic reputation, and faculty-student ratio reflect the quality of this world-renowned institution.

Given the university’s reputation for excellence, it’s no surprise that student reviewers comment on the valuable courses and quality of teaching. While the workload can be high for many courses—especially in the sciences—students say that it’s worth it for the supportive academic community.

Students also praise the ability to personalise their experience through their choice of college and course specialisations. The ability to develop strong student-faculty relationships also contributes to the academic environment, and faculty members encourage students to develop new ways of seeing the world.

Good for future researcher

About study: I’m learning physics now and it’s not easy. The programme is designed for future researchers so you can learn basic theories, research skills, and basic computing skills as well. The workload is okay, but (I feel) you have to study really hard if you want to not just be able to deal with the exam but also really understand the principles behind. The university is supportive. We have supervision every week and my supervisors are all really helpful and nice. There’re also many talks on related topics.
About living: accommodation is provided by the college. My room is big, with a double bed, and it’s at the city centre. I like it. 😀
About dining: I usually eat in college’s hall so I don’t need to think about what to eat. That really saves my time. The price is fair, and the foods are good. My college has formal hall almost every day – a good chance to talk with different people.
About people here: all the people in the university I’ve met are very nice. No one is gonna judge you on how you live, so you can be yourself here.
Plus: I like our gown!

Before joining the University of Cambridge, the whole system sounded incredibly intimidating. Meeting one-on-one with some of the world’s most distinguished academics and research pioneers initially seemed like a stressful experience. The freedom to choose my own texts and essay topics sounded like immense pressure. Writing multiple essays per week seemed like a recipe for insomnia.

2. University of Oxford

QS Rankings Europe University of Oxford

The University of Cambridge’s traditional rival, the University of Oxford, wins out in QS’ World University Rankings. Ranked second in Europe and third in the world, this is undoubtedly one of the best universities globally.

Like Cambridge, most student reviewers mention the high workload associated with Oxford courses. At a prestigious university like this, keeping up with assignments can be challenging and requires diligent time management. With this in mind, students also say that not having a good support system around them in such a demanding academic environment can make the experience more stressful.

However, if you want to attend university to challenge traditional ideas, Oxbridge is the ideal place. Students frequently mention the ‘tutorial’ aspect of the study experience, which brings students in 1:1 contact with faculty members to develop their independent thought.

Studying at Oxford is a unique and enriching experience. Although the workload can be heavy, the tutorial system allows you to receive more personalised feedback than you would at a non-Oxbridge university. Tutorial essays champion independent thought, and the tutorials itself (usually involving another student and one tutor) allow you to expand, challenge, and defend ideas. The 28 university libraries are called the Bodleian Libraries; they are scattered around the city which means you will always find a space to study. 1. Imperial College London

QS University Rankings Europe Best University

So, Europe’s top university is Imperial College London. Alongside UCL, Imperial is frequently considered one of the best institutions in the UK capital, especially for students who wish to study medicine, engineering, mathematics, or science. It’s also ranked second globally, just 1.5 points behind the global number-one university, MIT.

As a strong research institution, it’s no surprise that students say that experiential learning is one of the best features of an Imperial degree. Add to this the excellent academic environment, with world-class facilities and the ability to engage with professors doing world-class research, and you can see that this is one of the best places in the world to pursue STEM subjects.

Outside of the academic world, Imperial also offers plenty of ways for students to develop connections with each other. Extracurricular clubs enable students to get valuable downtime from their demanding studies and take advantage of life in one of the best student cities in the world.

The mindset of an Imperial College Aero student.

With Imperial College being one of the top universities in the world, one cannot expect an easy ride through studying a degree there. Students need grit, a passion for what they do, and above all, discipline to put in the work necessary to succeed. Aeronautical Engineering, one of the most competitive courses to get into, provides a vast knowledge base which can initially be overwhelming. I’ve found myself feeling a little lost at times, with too much information being unloaded at once, but with time you learn to connect the dots and a constellation of valuable knowledge begins to form. The most important part is knowing when you need to push through the struggle, or when someone isn’t worth your time or energy. It’s a difficult balance to achieve, but something that is important to learn as early on as possible.

Highlight is the connections I have made.

I really enjoy the diversity of opportunities available at my university. The academic programs are excellent and offer a wide range of disciplines to choose from. Additionally, the professors are knowledgeable and approachable, and the resources available to students, such as the library and the computer lab, are top-notch. I also appreciate the many extracurricular activities offered, such as clubs and sports teams, as they provide opportunities to get involved and meet new people. The campus is beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is very positive and supportive. Overall, I feel like my university has given me a great education and has helped me grow both academically and personally.

What Would the QS University Rankings Look Like from A Student’s Perspective?

To give you some perspective on student reviews of the QS University Rankings Europe, we’ve produced a new ranking based entirely on student ratings from EDUopinions (excluding Université PSL).

This is what a student version of the top 10 European schools on the QS World University Ranking would look like:

University Overall Rating
9. TUM – Technical University of Munich 4.16
8. University of Cambridge 4.18
7. University of Oxford 4.2
6. The University of Manchester 4.24
5. ETH Zurich 4.24
4. University College London 4.27
3. Imperial College London 4.31
2. The University of Edinburgh 4.33
1. EPFL – L’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne 4.67

There are some notable changes to our ranking compared to the QS ranking. Firstly, The University of Edinburgh jumps six places to take the number two spot over from the University of Oxford. Similarly, EPFL fares very well in the student ranking, taking over the number one spot with a high overall score of 4.67/5.

In fact, both the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge drop significantly in the student-led ranking, taking their places at the lower end of the top 10. By contrast, Imperial College London is the only university holding a top-three position in both rankings, which may be a testament to its academic excellence and the favourable student experience.

However, no single university on this student-led ranking scored lower than 4.10, proving that students highly regard these universities’ quality of professors and facilities, career prospects, and internationality.

Are you surprised by this ranking?

Conclusion

When you’re deciding on a university, rankings can be a great way to compare two institutions instantly. If you’re particularly interested in a certain factor (such as a university’s commitment to sustainability or its international research prospects), then the QS rankings have this information on hand.

However, student reviews can tell you even more about what it’s like to study at a particular university. Insider and behind-the-scenes information about class sizes, the learning experience, and campus life can make it even easier to evaluate whether a university is the right fit for you or not.

That’s why we’ve highlighted some valuable student reviews from the top universities in Europe—to help you make a more balanced decision about where to study.

Overall, EDUopinions student reviews generally aligned well with the QS rankings. Imperial College London’s impressive rankings across both the QS list and our student-led list prove it’s a formidable institution.
